Anthony Martial has accused Jose Mourinho of disrespecting him during his time at Manchester United
Mourinho came to the management of Manchester United a year after Martial had arrived there. The forward lost his starting spot under the Portuguese coach, however, and had to compete with Zlatan Ibrahimovic for the No.9 spot and Alexis Sanchez starting ahead of him.
“It started with the shirt number,” he told France Football. “During the holidays, he texted me asking if I would change him to No.11, explaining that it would be great because of the legend Ryan Giggs. I told him I have a lot of respect for Giggs but I prefer to keep the number 9. When I went back to the club, I saw my name was on the shirt with the number 11, the story did not go well.”
“He had no respect for me, to be honest. He used to talk to the media about me, small phrases, a bit like what he had done for Karim Benzema at Real Madrid. In the 2017/18 season, I was the team’s top scorer in the first half of the season, he brought in Alexis Sanchez and then I didn’t play much. It was the World Cup season as well, it cost me a lot in the end because France won it. I had to be there”.
Martial took time to be a starter in United’s lineup after Mourinho’s departure. His best season at Old Trafford was 2019/20, when he started 31 Premier League games, scored 17 goals and scored four times in the Europa League.
The Red Devils will play their next Europa League game against Sheriff next week.
